Mumbai: Reams have been written about olive oil and its amazing health and beauty benefits. Now a workshop, which is free to all, is being organised by Borge's Olive Oil at Iosis Spa, Andheri from 3 pm onwards.
Jaya Hiranandani, nutritionist, says, "Olive oil raises the levels of HDL (good cholesterol) because it contains high levels of MUFA (mono-unsaturated fatty acids) which aids in the production of good cholesterol. It's also a good source of anti-oxidants which fights the toxic effects of free radicals in the body."
There are four types ofolive oil: Extra virgin olive oil, virgin olive oil, pure oil and pomace oil (not used for consumption). The highest benefits can be derived from extra virgin olive oil which is best used as a salad dressing or simply drizzled on brown bread -- just like the Italians do.
However, one must be cautious of not over-consuming it. "Anything when done in excess is bad for health and it's the same case with olive oil. Not more than five tablespoons (or 50 ml) should be consumed a day according to the RDA (RecommendedDietary Allowance)," warns Hiranandani. Olive oil contains vitamin A, E and K. When ingested it also helps in preventing colon cancer.
Just as its multiple health benefits its beauty benefits are plentiful too. "Olive oil is the only vegetable oil that can be consumed directly -- freshly pressed from the fruit," says Kiran Bawa, managing director, Iosis Spa. It works wonders for a great scalp massage. It's hydrating properties makes hair soft and silky, specially damaged and dry hair.
"When mixed with egg it contains a high content of Vitamin E thereby richly nourishing the scalp. When rubbed into the feet it makes them soft," says Bawa.
This is why Olive Oil is so good, absolutely no reason not to get some
